Isla Baru is absolute paradise. It’s one of those places I close my eyes and dream of on a rainy day. Sure, it’s quite isolated and not easily accessible, but once you get there you have no desire to leave, so the lack of mobility isn’t an issue at all. We spent two nights/three days there, and although part of me would like to stay forever, it was a perfect little escape.
Our first stop in Colombia was Cartagena, the beautiful caribbean city in the north of the country that looks more like a perfectly preserved colonial town than a major city. Cartagena is warm, busy, and has some of the best restaurants I’ve ever tried. I’d give anything to be back there right now.
Ten days in Colombia was not enough! From Feb 17 to 27 I went to Colombia with my Dad, sister, and her boyfriend. It was by no means a backpacker’s trip – We stayed at some beautiful places and ate some really amazing meals. In the ten days we visited Cartagena, Baru, and Bogota, and there’s nowhere I don’t want to go back to!
Antigua was better than I expected, and I expected a lot. The city is beautiful and energized and just full of life. There’s a lot more going on here – more people, more tourists, more volcanos, and more unexplained religious festivals. It’s somewhere you can spend a day or a year and probably still have lots to discover and explore.
Tikal National Park is a gateway to another time. The ruins of an ancient city are located in the middle of the jungle, which grew up around the ruins since the city was abandoned in the 8th Century. Today only a small amount of the ancient city is visible – most of it is still covered with dirt and trees and rainforest. Visiting Tikal was amazing. It’s a long way away in the middle of nowhere, but once you step out into the jungle it’s all worth it.
, GuLake Atitlan is paradise on earth. It completely surprised me and if I had it my way I would never have left. Even as it was, we doubled the length of our stay because the thought of leaving this place was unimaginable. It should be #1 on anyone’s list who is visiting Guatemala, and just so that you’re prepared, two days is not enough.
I completely fell in love with Guatemala.
Somehow, last-minute two week trip with my sister that we booked primarily due to a cheap roundtrip flight to Guatemala city turned into one of my favourite countries I’ve visited. I’m already itching to go back, and unlike other countries where I’d like to someday go back and visit, I think Guatemala is somewhere I’ll be revisiting soon!
